My artwork is about re-creating a visual state of mind. It is not derived by a landscape or a specific person but rather a mental state achieved by reflecting on what I am currently going through as an artist. It could be a relationship, something physical, or the act of working in a solitary space. My process starts off mindless, but as I paint layer after layer, I become more engaged, tapping into a particular mental state that allows me to become more aware of what the painting may be about. Each mark and color is a documentation of my thoughts. The marks represent real time, my body is present but my mind may not be. Finding the balance between past, present, and future is something I am always seeking in my work.
The dark and bright colors in my color palette represent time. Sometimes, this means looking forward, anxiously waiting by looking past the present and trying to peel the layers of time before they are ready. Other times, I am content, looking back on how events unfolded for me to get me to that point.
My lines mimic my handwriting. It is a comfortable way to cover my whole canvas quickly and accurately. I do not want a piece to be planned; I want to keep it as honest and relatable as possible.
My artwork is a color field with linear marks that represent me in real time.
